The City of Boulder, CO is located at the base of the foothills of the Rocky Mountains at an elevation of 5,430 feet (1,655 m). Just west of the city are imposing slabs of sedimentary stone tilted up on the foothills, known as the Flatirons. The Flatirons are a widely recognized symbol of Boulder.

Boulder is surrounded by more than 36,000 acres of recreational open space, conservation easements, and nature preserves. There are world-class hiking trails throughout the city. The City of Boulder Open Space website is a resource for information about outdoor activities.
